Leaked Britney Spears Track?

Although the first official single from Britney Spears’ new album Circus is not due until Sept. 22, E! is reporting a possible leaked single featuring hip hop duo Laze & Royal entitled “Candy from Strangers.” Check it out:

Well it certainly sounds like Brit, and if this is a single from the new album Circus, it is definitely a step in the right direction. It’s a funky earworm that’s impossible not to dance to.

Unfortunately, with no confirmation either way, we are left to determine whether or not this is actually a Britney Spears song or just a copycat.

I think it’s the genuine article, what about you?

Amanda Palmer: "Guitar Hero"

I was a little confused by “Strength Through Music” but the latest installment in the Who Killed Amanda Palmer video series is a great recovery.

“Guitar Hero” is a return to the aggressive and martial sound that suits Palmer so nicely. The baseline and melody closely resemble that of “Love Me Dead” by Ludo (coincidence probably), all bouncy with a cheeky edge.

It’s a fun track and probably my favorite thus far. Check it out:

New Björk: "The Dull Flame of Desire"

After hosting a fan video contest, Björk invited three of the winners to collaborate on the video for her upcoming single “The Dull Flame of Desire.”

“Dull Flame” is a beautifully melancholy duet. Björk and Anthony Hegarty’s voices drip with woeful passion as the drums build, fueling the song’s urgency and stark desolation.

The single will be available as limited edition “12 vinyl and CD Sept. 22 and will include several “Dull Flame” remixes, as well as a Saden remix of “Innocence.” Keep an eye on Bjork.com for more information.

Lindsay Lohan Can No Longer Hold Her Tongue Regarding Sarah Palin’s Homophobia

lindsay lohan

Lindsay Lohan is not certainly the first or only celebrity to call Sarah Palin out for one reason or another (namely lack of experience and polarizing prejudices). Only a day after Palin was introduced as the Republican Vices Presidential candidate, Heart asked her to cease and desist using their song for her campaign theme.

Apparently after reading an Associated Press article about Palin’s church’s advocating for the conversion of gays, Lilo had had enough and could take no more:

I find it quite interesting that a woman who now is running to be second in command of the United States, only 4 years ago had aspirations to be a television anchor. Which is probably all she is qualified to be… Also interesting that she got her passport in 2006.. And that she is not fond of environmental protection considering she’s FOR drilling for oil in some of our protected land…. Well hey, if she wants to drill for oil, she should DO IT IN HER OWN backyard. This really shows me her complete lack of real preparation to become the second most powerful person in this country…

I know that the most important thing about this election is that people need to exercise their right to vote, regardless of their choice… I would have liked to have remained impartial, however I am afraid that the “lipstick on a pig” comments will overshadow the issues and the fact that I believe Barack Obama is the best choice, in this election, for president… [source]

She went on to say that while she’d like to see a woman in the white house, she’s disappointed that real issues are being ignored in favor of focusing on Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” comment and advised Palin not to pose any more tabloids.

See the full entry on Lindsay’s Myspace blog.

Flashback Friday: Portishead "Glory Box"

Portishead pioneered the trip-hop genre in the mid-90s with there debut LP Dummy. The album with its melodic melancholy, looped sampled baselines and the tormented sorrow in vocalist Beth Gibbons’ voice, became an underground success and has been heralded as one of the best of all time.

“Glory Box” with it’s haunting baseline, and filmy production is a beautifully despondent song. Gibbons begs for any reason to continue the love affair, all the while we all know she is really looking for a reason to let go.

I’m so tired…of playing…playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away,
Leave it for the other girls to play.
‘Cause I’ve been a temptress too long.

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be
A woman
I just want to be a woman

Shirley Manson is a Terminator

Garbage front woman, Shirley Mason, was planning on putting out a solo album, that has been put on hold indefinitely while she and her record label for common ground.

I played some of the stuff to the record label not long ago and they described it as being very noir. At the time, I took the comment as being a huge compliment. That they liked the intensity of my material. But then I realized it wasn’t intended as a compliment. But I’m 41, I’m a woman not a kid. I have no interest in making silly pop music and I don’t want to wear a silly sexy outfit and sell myself short. I’m sure it will all get sorted out in the end. But I do think record companies, in general, have different ideas about how they promote women. In the end, it is down to each and every woman to fight to be treated as an individual. I just want to be who I am.” [source]

In the meantime, Manson has landed a recurring role on the Fox series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as perhaps the sexiest Terminator, EVAR. Critics are all up in arms about Manson’s character morphing from “about-to-be-peed-on urinal into a killing machine.”  Aside from successfully avoiding the yellow rain, she’s a sexy and sinister, terminating S&M wet dream.

Beyoncé to Release New Album

beyonce

It’s been two years since the release of B-Day and we should have known that Beyoncé, the beloved pop/R&B princess, could not stay away for long; especially not now that she’s settled into her marriage to hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.

Beyoncé’s third solo LP - currently untitled - is scheduled for release November 18th, and is being touted as the chanteuse’s most personal and “revelatory” work to date.

Several tracks from the album have already been leaked. Sources say, however, official singles “If I Were a Boy” and “Single Ladies” will drop as the release date approaches.

This announcement comes on the heels of Beyoncé’s Fashion Rocks performances this week.

Singled Out: Janelle Monaé "Sincerely Jane"

cindi mayweather

A few weeks back I wrote about Janell Monaé, an up-and-coming soul artist from Atlanta. She had just released her debut EP, Metropolis: The Chase Suite, to rave reviews and was courted by the Purple One himself, after a recent show at the Viper Room in LA.

After listening to the album a bit more (who am I kidding, I haven’t taken it out of the CD player in my car since I bought it), I want to share one song in particular. I’ll preface by saying, it’s been a very long time since I’ve been genuinely excited about a new soul/r&b artist. So much of it is either boring, unoriginal or the person singing is lacking true vocal chops. Monaé though, her music is enthralling, her stage presence magnificent and her lyrics drenched in socio-political consciousness (I loves me some thinking music).

To wit, “Sincerely Jane” is perhaps one of the most jarring social commentaries on the EP. What I love is that although the album is cloaked in a futuristic concept, the message is acutely poignant. The city (”Metropolis”) has begun degenerating into lawlessness and the rogue android receives a letter from her mother warning her not to come back home. Read More

Jessica Simpson Makes Her Country Debut: Do You Know

jessica-simpson

For those of you who have been eagerly awaiting the official release of Jessica Simpson’s debut country album Do You Know (I can’t understand why, it was leaked in August), today is the day.

This return to her roots has been a long time coming for the pop-princess, turned reality television star, turned country singer. After bumbling during a Dolly Pardon tribute two years ago, Simpson considered throwing in the towel on her music career. In an interview with E! Simpson talks about the pressure of having to please both fans and critics, working with Dolly Pardon and feeling like she’s on the comeback track.
