Vanessa Williams Receives B.A. from Syracuse
Just last week we told you about Gretchen Wilson receiving her GED, well today we want to tell you about another great musical woman who earned a degree. Vanessa Williams received her Bachelor of Arts from Syracuse University.
Almost 25 years ago Vanessa dropped out of Syracuse to become the first black Miss America and returned over the weekend to give her convocation address and finally receive her degree. After receiving the B.A. she raised it high over her head so her mother and kids could see it too.
Now, to be honest, I have certain opinions about giving celebrities degrees just so they’ll come and speak at graduation. I mean, this is school - do we really need celebrities to fill the seats at graduation? Seeing our kids accomplish their goals is enough for most of us. Still, I’m not one to take away from a moment - so congratulations, Vanessa. Let’s hope this inspires many young women to graduate from college.
