VMA Highlights: Britney Spears, Rihanna, Pink and Katy Perry, Oh My!

For anyone who missed the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) last night, don’t worry, there will be plenty of re-runs. To be completely honest, the whole thing was pretty boring - Russell Brand was not funny in the least and Britney Spears’ “opening act” was beyond lame. There were, however, a few highlights worth noting.

I’m really wondering if this year’s VMA’s were really a pitty party for Brit. Dispite being a much better performer and making way better videos prior to the melt down, she finally took home a VMA (three to be exact) including Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for “Piece of Me.” Uh…hello! That video was awful, unoriginal and (yawn) boring. If she was going to win, it should have been during her prime when she was actually entertaining. Note to Britney Spears: you are not talented enough to just stand around looking like a video girl; try getting your groove back. Is it really a win when people vote because they feel sorry for you? I guess the fans have spoken. Ugh!

Rihanna’s “Disturbia” performance was hot. I mean, HOT! The girl is strikingly beautiful and her voice has this rich feathery quality to it. And in the middle of the song, the band broke into a “Seven Nation Army” jam. Check it out:

Ok so home girl is a little stiff; she still looks and sounds good. Better than Katy Perry’s cheeky rendition of “Like a Virgin.” She doesn’t move. Seriously, can someone get this girl a vocal coach and teach her how to entertain people please? Here’s a clip:

On a more positive note, Pink rocked the heck out of her new song “So What.” So what it’s a crappy song, Pink’s voice is awesome and she totally worked it out. Christina Aguilera’s performance was also one of the best of the night; although I would have liked to see her wear something more flattering for her post-pregnancy body.

Other big winners of the night included Tokyo Hotel for Best New Artist and Pussycat Dolls’ “When I Grow Up” won Best Dance Video.
